- A cynical look at the seedy relationship between the media and the news it reports and the manner in which it reports it, . Chuck Tatum, a down-on-his-luck reporter who has been fired from eleven newspapers for offenses such as slander and adultery, takes a job with a small Albuquerque, New Mexico newspaper. Desperate for a scoop that will be his ticket back to a big-city newspaper, he happens upon the story of a lifetime--a local miner who gets stuck in a cave, a situation that Tatum not only exploits but actually manipulates in order to improve his career chances. Paramount Pictures changed the title to "The big carnival" just prior to its release in 1951
