When a mysterious young American woman, Edwina (Richardson), arrives in Kilshannon, a small town inhabited largely by widows led by Mrs. Doyle Counihan (Plowright), no one can get any information about her, including Mrs. Counihan's son, who is wooing Edwina. Miss Catherine O'Hare (Farrow) and Edwina immediately dislike each other, with their rivalry escalating until the entire town is in an uproar
