- In 1914 with Europe on the brink of war, a young engineer from South Africa is involved in international intrigue by a British secret agent with information on a Prussian plot for assassination. When the agent is killed and his notes entrusted to the engineer, he is pursued across Britain and Scotland by the Prussians and the police who think he killed the agent. Its left to him to decipher the meaning of the thirty nine steps
